At least some of that problem can be solved simply by using a voltage regulator. The problem is that the voltage regulator is a very expensive item and it is very often not available to the general public. Also, since I am speaking from personal experience, the voltage regulator I have used is probably best used for situations where the voltage level across the device is very high, and the current flowing through the device is very low.
